Neurosurgical Oncology

Neurosurgical Oncology deals with all kinds of tumors of the brain, the spinal cord and their covering sheaths.

In our department, we offer a broad variety of surgical treatment options, such as microsurgical resection, stereotactic surgery and awake brain surgery with additional use of modern imaging, neuromonitoring and neuronavigation techniques. Also, we are in close collaboration with the Radiotherapy department and the Oncology department, so that every patient will be provided an individually tailored treatment plan for their condition.

Once the histological results are available, each case will be discussed in our multidisciplinary tumor board. The board consists of specialized experts from the fields of Neurosurgery, Neurology and Radiotherapy. This team evaluates complex cases and determines the best treatment strategy for each patient.

Awake brain surgery

If a tumor lies in a so-called eloquent area that is responsible for important brain functions as language, speech or motor skills, it might be necessary to perform the tumor removal while the patient is awake, so that the patient can be continuously assessed for these functions while the tumor is being resected. A team of specifically trained neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and anesthesiologists will take care of the patient during the awake surgery to maximise the patient’s comfort and safety.
