Welcome to the Department of Neurosurgery!

The Department of Neurosurgery Innsbruck is situated in the middle of the Alps, main city of the western part of Austria and the capital city of Tirol region - Innsbruck. Our leading centre carries out a wide spectrum of highly specialized procedures to treat complex pathologies of the brain, the spine including the spinal cord and the peripheral nerves in adults and in children. We, as a part of Medical University of Innsbruck, are holding our own intensive care unit and scientific laboratories.

Brain tumors, vascular malformations of the brain and of the spinal cord, functional conditions (including epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease) account for a major part of our cases. Also, we offer surgical treatment to patients suffering from hydrocephalus, chronic pain syndrome, compression syndrome of peripheral nerves and degenerative pathologies of the spine such as degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, spinal instability, scoliosis as well as tumors of the spine and the spinal cord. Due to our location in the alpine region we are experienced in the managing of brain and spinal cord traumatic injuries.

Prof. Dr. Claudius Thomé, Head of the Department, is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon and was recently elected President of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS). He and his team are dedicated to providing the best possible care for our patients, using the most advanced surgical techniques and the latest high-tech equipment.
